Brand Development:

Absurd Bird, specialises in comfort food of the American South. The brand commits itself to high-quality service, ethical sourcing and an authentic American South dining experience. The Exeter branch is an extension of their original London restaurant, and opened in the Guildhall Shopping Centre.

The new branch took its design inspiration from the deep-south aesthetics of a bayou. Together, FormRoom and DesignLSM brought the bayou restaurant to life with a truly unique and captivating interior. The restaurant was designed to give playful reference to Absurd Bird’s brand narrative; two outcast birds who form a friendship and embark on outlandish adventures. The restaurant is crafted like an old swamp diner with an agreeably contemporary feel.

“Entirely new design features, cocktail bar and quirky lighting details creating a buzzy and eclectic feel”

Design + Manufacture

With a plantation inspired dovecote transformed into a light, lush green foliage and typographical quotes from ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ customers are transported to a world that lies a mere five thousand miles away.

FormRoom created a feature wall using traditional swing-door panels to greet customers at the entrance. Again, providing contextual reference to the brands deep-south marque. The doors are individually painted using four pastoral colour-blocking tones – setting in motion the ‘absurd’ theme.

The restaurant design is dressed in brand signifiers, including a continuum of distressed and rustic furnishings. The vintage interior is lit with hanging lamps and lagoon-turquoise tealights. Customers can experience an authentic deep-south meal, while captivated by a historic, playful interior.

A bespoke cocktail bar, swinging porch benches, teacup & saucer lights, and a giant window wall looking out onto rich scenes of the swamp and surrounding landscape contribute to a buzzing and atmospheric environment.
